The gridlocked members of the congressional supercommittee should grab President Barack Obama and decamp to a tropical island. Specifically, they should visit Puerto Rico, where a courageous leader is using free-market reforms to reinvigorate this recently moribund U.S. territory.

If conservatives intend to translate Tea Party enthusiasm into actual power they are certainly going to have begin to put like-minded folks into office and not just at the federal level. Every office from dogcatcher, to city offices, to county and state offices needs to be filled with Tea Party advocates. Conservatives cannot expect an enduring governing capability by focusing solely on federal elections.

This will come as a shock to the devoted socialists of the east and west coasts, but the most provincial areas of this country are not located in the Midwest, the Southwest or even the Bible belt of the Deep South. Quite the contrary; these areas respect diversity of thought in ways east and west coast liberals cannot fathom.

While there are hundreds of political parties and even more political initiatives seeking support, when all of the hoopla is stripped away, there are only two political philosophies. One philosophy embraces the notion that government is omnipotent and grants rights to individual citizens. This philosophy is demonstrated by the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights and more pointedly in the U.N. Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Article 19, for example, guarantees everyone has the right of free expression, but then goes on to say that “The exercise of these rights ... carries with it special duties and responsibilities. It may therefore be subject to certain restrictions”.
Republicans in Congress, you guys and gals want to start fixing the problems we have here in America? You want to prove to America that you are serious about dealing with serious problems? There are a lot of things that need done but here is a list to start with. Some of these are quick fixes that you can get enough Democrats in the Senate to go along with. Others are things that “moderate” Democrats in the Senate will fight tooth and nail against and set up the battle for the 2012 elections. But they all must be done.
Tuesday’s election marked a stunning turn-around for the Republican Party, which gained 60 new seats in the House and an six additional seats in the Senate. As much as any other demographic, it was conservative men who brought the GOP back from two dreary years in the political wilderness.
